Don Jaime, an old Spanish hidalgo, lives retired in an abandoned hacienda since the death of his wife, which occurred on the same day of their wedding.
There he receives a visit from his niece Viridiana, who has a great physical resemblance to his wife and a novice in a convent.
Don Jaime tries to seduce her, but seeing that he cannot keep her, he commits suicide and Viridiana, feeling guilty for this death, renounces her life as a nun.
