Author:

(Las Palmas, 1843-Madrid, 1920) was the greatest narrator of his time and the main transformer of the modern novel. In the wake of Miguel de Cervantes, Galdós knew how to reflect the time he had to live with a critical and expressive writing. A good connoisseur of English and French literature, he adapted the narrative innovations of authors such as Dickens and Balzac to his own interests and style. Among his extensive production, titles such as Fortunata and Jacinta (1887), Miau (1888), Tristana (1892), Misericordia (1897) and the forty-six volumes of the National Episodes stand out, an ambitious project that begins with Trafalgar (1884) and concludes with Canovas (1912). His interest in Spain, from very advanced republican and liberal positions for his time, is evident in the whole of his literary and journalistic work. Elected deputy in Cortes, his parliamentary participation was scarce. On two occasions (1905 and 1912) he was nominated for the Nobel Prize for Literature.
