CHAPTER 9
Fortunata and her husband live with Doña Lupe in their new house on Ave María Street, near the army where Maxi works. It has been a long time since Fortunata last saw Juan Santa Cruz, but he is once again showing signs The two meet again and discreetly resume their relationship, while Maxi Rubín begins to lose his mind.

The situation at Doña Lupe's house, between her and the Rubín couple, becomes unbearable. Maxi, with lost reason, senses that his wife is expecting a child, and says so.
