Year 1851. Ada, who has been mute since she was a child, has just become a widower. An arranged marriage forces her to leave her native Scotland and travel to New Zealand, accompanied by her daughter and her piano. There she meets her future husband, a prosperous farmer who refuses to take the piano home. Abandoned on the beach, the instrument will be rescued by a neighbor who establishes a strange pact with Ada: he will let her use his piano in exchange for her letting herself be played.
