The mystical South Island has colored gems that have the ability to make all wishes come true. Evil scientist Dr. Robotnik (also known as "Eggman") learns about the legendary Chaos Emeralds and decides to use them to rule the island. He builds various factories and devices and kidnaps innocent little animals to turn them into "Badnik robots" to serve him. Suddenly, a speedy blue hedgehog arrives on the scene, opposing the evil scientist's intentions and planning to free the innocent animals. He is Robotnik's archenemy, Sonic the Hedgehog .
Sonic the Hedgehog is a platform game developed by Sonic Team and released in 1991 for the Sega Mega Drive. It is the first game in the game series of the same name. The game was released in North America and Europe in June 1991 and in Japan in July of the same year. The game received wide acclaim and quickly replaced Altered Beast , which was previously a Mega Drive bundled game, quickly becoming one of the best-selling games for the Mega Drive and Sega.
